How Much Does CRCST Certification Really Cost?

The exam fee is the headline number, but certification comes with a whole receipt. Here is every line item, verified against HSPA.

The short answer: Plan on $190 to about $640 for your first year of CRCST certification. The HSPA exam fee is $140, the technical manual usually runs under $100, annual renewal is $50, and a single retake adds another $140. The rest of the bill is timing and logistics.

The $140 headline: the exam application fee

HSPA lists the CRCST initial exam fee at $140. That single payment covers application processing and one exam attempt at a Prometric test center. It is not a yearly subscription and not a deposit. Once HSPA approves your application, you schedule your own appointment with Prometric, because HSPA does not schedule for you.

If you fail, the meter resets: a retake application costs the same $140. HSPA also states that cancellation or refund requests made within 30 days of payment are refunded in full, minus a $25 non-refundable application fee. Treat that as a small safety net, not a strategy.

The membership nuance: helpful, never required

HSPA states that membership is not required to obtain certification, so no membership fee stands between you and the exam. Membership is an optional add-on: at renewal, certification alone costs $50 while certification plus membership costs $60, a $10 difference.

When does membership pay for itself? HSPA members get discounts on HSPA products and education, including the technical manual, the workbook, lesson plans, and webinars. If you plan to buy the 9th edition manual, the workbook, and scored lesson plans from HSPA anyway, those discounts can pay back the membership quickly. If you are self-studying with a borrowed manual and free practice questions, skip it. Membership never changes your exam fee and never changes your score.

Study materials: the real cost spectrum

The exam is developed from HSPA's Central Service Technical Manual, 9th edition, so most candidates buy or borrow it. New copies through the HSPA bookstore typically cost less than $100. Always confirm the current price on the HSPA store page before ordering, because prices shift between printings and promotions.

Optional extras include the CRCST workbook with chapter-by-chapter practice questions, HSPA lesson plans that also earn 2 CE credits each when scored through Purdue, and paid prep courses. None of these is required to pass. Our prep book guide explains how to study from the manual alone.

The cheapest stack is a borrowed manual plus free practice tests. The most expensive stack is a full prep course plus every HSPA product. Either way, the exam fee stays the same $140, and the practice test below stays free.

The 400-hour requirement has costs too

The 400 hands-on hours are free to document, but the life around them is not. Candidates placed in unpaid practicums give up weeks of potential wages. Even paid spots can come with onboarding costs: background checks, drug screens, TB tests or immunizations, uniforms or scrubs, and parking at the hospital.

Ask the facility what it covers before you accept a spot. Some hospitals absorb the entire onboarding bill; others hand you a checklist. A $50 drug screen and a $75 background check are normal. Budget $0 to $150 for practicum extras so they never surprise you. Our internship hours guide walks through the whole requirement.

Prometric fees and test-day logistics

You schedule your own exam through Prometric after HSPA approval, and Prometric's rescheduling policy is where surprise fees live. Fees for changing an appointment depend on how close your test date is, so moving a date the week of the exam costs more than moving it a month out. Always confirm the current fee table on Prometric's own site, and reschedule early if your plans change.

The quieter costs are driving to the test center, parking, and a valid government ID if yours is close to expiring. A no-show is not a refund, so treat your appointment like a flight you already paid for.

Renewal: the $50 yearly bill

CRCST certification must be renewed every year. HSPA charges $50 for certification-only renewal, or $60 with the optional membership, and you must complete 12 continuing education credits during each renewal year.

CE credits can be free: HSPA podcasts earn 0.5 CE per episode with a quiz, and your facility's in-services count when properly documented. Or they can cost money: paid webinars, conferences, and scored lesson plans. Spread the work across the year and the free options can keep this line item at zero forever. Our renewal guide has the full playbook.

Three realistic first-year budgets

Line itemBare bonesTypicalRough start (one retake)
Exam application fee$140$140$140
Study materials$0 (borrowed)$85$85
Practicum extras$0$75$75
Travel and rescheduling$0$25$75
Retake$0$0$140
First annual renewal$50$50$50
Year-one total$190$375$565

Your real number lives somewhere between the bare bones and the rough start. The single cheapest lever is the middle column of the retake row: passing on the first attempt is worth $140, plus the weeks you do not spend studying again.

Memory anchor: Think of certification as a $140 exam with a $50 yearly subscription. Everything else is how you choose to prepare.
