Short answer: HSPA has never published an official CRCST passing score. Your result is a pass or fail, not a percentage grade. Many prep sources quote an unofficial rule of thumb of roughly 70% of the 125 scored questions (about 88 correct), but HSPA has never confirmed it. The practical target is simple: get as many right as you can in every domain.
What HSPA officially says about scoring
HSPA, the organization behind the CRCST credential, keeps the exam's scoring details close. Here is what can be confirmed from HSPA's own certification pages and published exam statistics:
- 150 questions, 3 hours. The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions with three hours on the clock, about 72 seconds per question.
- 125 scored, 25 pilot. Only 125 of the 150 questions count toward your result. The other 25 are unscored pilot items HSPA uses to test future questions. They are not identified, so you cannot spot them and must treat every question as if it counts.
- Pass or fail result. HSPA reports a pass or fail outcome. Your score report includes your performance by exam domain, which tells you where you were strong and where you lost points.
- No published cut score. Unlike some exams that state "you need 70% to pass," HSPA's certification materials do not publish a numeric passing standard or a fixed number of correct answers required.
This is not unusual. Many professional certification exams withhold the exact cut score so candidates study the whole outline instead of aiming for a bare minimum. That is also why any site that claims "the official passing score is X" should be treated with suspicion: HSPA has not said, so nobody outside HSPA can know.
Where the "70%" figure actually comes from
Search for "CRCST passing score" and you will see 70% quoted everywhere. That number comes from prep companies and candidate reports, not from HSPA. The logic is simple arithmetic: 70% of 125 scored questions is about 88 correct answers, so 87 or fewer correct would mean a fail under that assumption.
There are two reasons to treat that figure as a practice target rather than a fact:
- It is unconfirmed. HSPA has never published it, so no prep company can verify it. It may be close to the real cut score, or it may not.
- Exam forms differ. Certification exams use multiple question forms, and the passing standard accounts for slight differences in difficulty between forms. A raw count of correct answers does not translate one-to-one into a pass or fail.
What actually moves the needle on your result
Since there is no official number to game, the scoring system rewards one thing: getting more questions right across all seven domains. Here is where the points live, based on HSPA's published exam domain weights:
| Domain | Weight | Approx. scored questions |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning, decontamination, and disinfection | 21% | About 26 of 125 |
| Preparation and packaging | 21% | About 26 of 125 |
| Sterilization process | 21% | About 26 of 125 |
| Departmental considerations | 15% | About 19 of 125 |
| Sterile storage, transport, and inventory | 9% | About 11 of 125 |
| Professional development and human relations | 8% | About 10 of 125 |
| Patient care equipment and distribution | 5% | About 6 of 125 |
Two implications matter for your score. First, the three 21% domains are where every point counts most: a weak decontamination section costs you roughly four times as many points as a weak patient-care-equipment section. Second, with only 125 scored questions, every single one matters more than it feels like. Ten careless mistakes is 8% of your scored total.
What your score report tells you
Even without a numeric passing score, HSPA's domain-level score report is the most useful document in your whole certification journey. It shows how you performed in each of the seven domains, which means:
- If you pass, you can see which domains to keep sharp during recertification continuing education.
- If you fail, the report is your study plan: your weakest domains become your first priority for the retake.
