CRCST Exam Requirements: What You Need Before You Apply

The diploma, the 400 hands-on hours broken down by domain, and the provisional route that lets you test first. Here is every requirement, in plain language.

The short answer: To earn the CRCST credential you need a high school diploma or GED plus 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department. You do not have to finish the hours before testing: pass the exam first and HSPA grants provisional status, giving you six months to complete and document the hours. Miss that window and the credential is revoked.

The two requirements

HSPA, the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (formerly IAHCSMM), keeps the eligibility list short but strict. There are exactly two gates:

  1. Education: a high school diploma or GED. No college degree is required.
  2. Experience: 400 hours of hands-on work in a real sterile processing department, verified by a supervisor. Classroom study, online courses, and simulations do not count.

The experience requirement is the one that surprises career changers. It is not a suggestion and it cannot be waived. It exists because the exam tests judgment built through actual instrument handling, decontamination, and sterilization work under real conditions.

The 400-hour breakdown

HSPA does not accept 400 arbitrary hours. The experience must be distributed across the department's core functions, with this exact split:

Experience areaRequired hours
Decontamination120
Preparing and packaging instruments120
Sterilization and disinfection120
Storage and distribution24
Quality assurance processes16
Total400

Notice the weighting. Decontamination, packaging, and sterilization together make up 360 of the 400 hours, which mirrors the exam itself, where those three domains carry 21% each. Your hours and your study time should point at the same targets. Our exam content outline guide maps each domain to what the test actually asks.

Full vs provisional certification

This is the part that solves the chicken-and-egg problem: how do you get SPD experience if employers prefer certified techs? HSPA offers two routes to the same credential.

Route 1: Full CRCST

You already have the 400 hours documented when you apply. Pass the exam and you receive full CRCST certification. The hours can have been completed within the five years before testing.

Route 2: Provisional CRCST

You pass the exam first, before finishing the hours. HSPA grants provisional CRCST status, and you get six months from your exam date to complete and document the required 400 hours. The hours can be paid employment or volunteer work in an SPD.

The catch: if you do not finish and document the hours within exactly six months of passing, provisional certification is revoked and you must reapply and retake the exam. Secure a department for your hours before you test whenever possible.

What counts toward the hours

The application and testing window

You apply through HSPA and, once approved, you receive a 120-day testing window to schedule and complete your exam. You book your own appointment at a Prometric test center. HSPA recommends scheduling within the first 45 days so you get your preferred date and time.

The exam itself is 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours. Only 125 are scored; the other 25 are unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. You get a pass or fail result, based on a scaled score of 550 out of 800. Our pass rate and scoring guide explains what that number really means.

Memory anchor: Think 400 hours, five areas, two routes. 120, 120, 120, 24, 16. Test now with the provisional route, or bank the hours first and test with full status.

Frequently asked questions

What are the eligibility requirements for the CRCST exam?

HSPA requires a high school diploma or GED and 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department, split across decontamination (120), preparing and packaging (120), sterilization and disinfection (120), storage and distribution (24), and quality assurance (16).

Do I need the 400 hours before I can take the CRCST exam?

Not necessarily. HSPA offers a provisional route: pass the exam first and earn provisional CRCST status, then complete and document the 400 hours within six months of your exam date.

What happens if I do not finish the 400 hours within six months of passing?

Provisional certification is revoked and you must reapply and retake the exam, so line up a department for your hours before you test if you can.

Does volunteer work count toward the 400 CRCST hours?

Yes. The hours can be paid employment or volunteer work in a sterile processing department, and every hour must be verified by an SPD manager or supervisor.

How long do I have to take the exam after HSPA approves my application?

You get a 120-day testing window from the date your application is approved to schedule and complete your exam at a Prometric test center.

Is HSPA the same as IAHCSMM?

Yes. The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) is the current name of the organization formerly known as IAHCSMM, and it administers the CRCST exam.
