Short answer: CRCST certification renews every year. Each renewal requires 12 continuing education credits earned during your renewal year, a renewal fee of $50 for certification only ($60 with HSPA membership), and submitting your renewal application on dashboard.myhspa.org by your due date. Miss the date and you get a six-week grace period, then your certification is terminated and you must retest.
The CRCST renewal requirements at a glance
HSPA keeps renewal simple on purpose: one year, one checklist, done. According to HSPA's renewal help pages, here is what every CRCST holder must complete each year:
| Requirement | What HSPA says |
|---|---|
| Renewal cycle | Annual. Your certification has a due date every year, and HSPA mails your renewal statement to your primary address the month before it arrives. |
| Continuing education | 12 CE credits earned during your renewal year. CE is how HSPA confirms you stay current with standards, IFUs, and practice changes. |
| Renewal fee | $50 for certification only, or $60 for certification plus HSPA membership. The fee stays the same no matter how many HSPA certifications you hold. |
| How to file | Online at dashboard.myhspa.org: My Certifications tab, then the Renew button next to your credential. |
| Processing time | Allow 2 to 3 business days for HSPA to review your submission and apply your credits. |
That is the entire official checklist. Notice what is not on it: there is no re-exam for on-time renewals, no work-experience requirement, and no hours-in-practice minimum. Keep your 12 credits current and pay the fee, and your credential stays active. For a lighter overview, see our CRCST certification renewal guide.
Step by step: how to renew on dashboard.myhspa.org
HSPA's help center walks through the online renewal process. Here it is in plain order:
- Log in to your dashboard. Go to dashboard.myhspa.org and sign in to your HSPA account.
- Open My Certifications. Click the My Certifications tab to see your active credentials.
- Click Renew. Select the Renew button next to your CRCST certification.
- Complete the renewal sections. You will be guided through several sections in order: Statement of Understanding, Continuing Education (CE), HSPA Membership, then Review and Submit.
- Pay. Click Checkout, then Go to Payment. Enter your payment and address information, click Validate and Save Address, and then confirm.
The whole flow takes a few minutes once your CE certificates are ready. The 2 to 3 business day review happens after you submit, so do not wait until the final day of your due date to file. If you run into trouble during the process, HSPA directs you to email [email protected].
How to document and upload your CE credits
Earning CE is only half the job; HSPA has to see proof of it. HSPA's CE upload guide describes the process:
- Use the CE Upload tool. In your dashboard, open CE Upload. This opens the certificate upload tool.
- Upload your certificates. Drag and drop each CE certificate into the upload box. HSPA accepts PDF, PNG, JPG, and TIFF files.
- Confirm the details. Check or enter the date shown on each certificate, then click Submit. Your certificate goes to review.
- Allow 2 to 3 business days for approval and for the credits to appear on your account.
If the upload tool errors out, HSPA says you can email your CE certificate directly to [email protected] instead. Either way, save your certificates somewhere you control, like a folder on your own computer or drive, not just your facility's system. If you change jobs mid-year, your CE records should move with you.
The six-week grace period, explained
HSPA's help center is direct about what happens when the due date passes with documents or payment still missing:
- A six-week grace period is granted when required renewal documents and payment are not submitted and processed by the certification due date.
- No further extensions are made after the grace period deadline. There is no second grace period and no appeal window described.
- Miss the grace period and your certification is terminated. You will be required to test again to regain certification. That means reapplying, paying the exam fee, and passing the full CRCST exam a second time.
Do not confuse the grace period with extra time to earn CE. It is a window to get your paperwork and payment in, not a second chance to start studying. The practical lesson: treat your due date as a hard deadline and use the grace period only as insurance, never as the plan.
What happens if your CRCST lapses
If the grace period passes without a completed renewal, HSPA revokes the certification and any membership tied to it. From that point:
- You cannot present yourself as CRCST-certified. The credential is no longer current, and facilities routinely verify certification status before hiring or during audits.
- An expired credential can affect employment. Sterile processing departments treat active certification as proof of ongoing competence. A lapsed credential raises questions you do not want in an interview or a performance review.
- The only way back is retesting. There is no reinstatement path that skips the exam. You reapply, pay the full exam fee, and pass the 150-question exam again.
Easy ways to earn your 12 CE credits
Twelve credits is one credit a month, which is very doable with a little planning. Common sources technicians use:
- HSPA online self-study lessons. HSPA offers online lessons graded through its site, typically worth a few credits each toward the 12.
- Purdue self-study lessons. Purdue University Online publishes six CRCST lessons a year, each worth 2 CE credits toward the 12, with an annual subscription covering all six.
- Facility in-services. Many hospitals run CE-eligible in-service sessions for SPD staff. Ask your manager which sessions carry CE documentation.
- Conferences and webinars. HSPA events, chapter meetings, and vendor webinars frequently offer CE credits, and some are free.
- Professional journals. Some journals pair articles with short exams for CE credit.
Whatever you choose, verify the activity actually awards HSPA-accepted CE before you count it, upload your certificates promptly, and keep your own copies.
