The short answer: Sample questions are a diagnostic tool, not a study plan. Try a handful across the 7 domains, read every explanation (especially why the wrong answers are wrong), log your misses by domain, and let the pattern tell you where to study next. The six original questions below cover six different domains in the style of the real exam.
1 Try the six questions
These questions were written fresh for this page in the style of the CRCST exam. They are not real HSPA items, because HSPA does not release its exam questions. Answer each one honestly, no peeking, then press the button for your score and the full explanations.
2 What each question was really testing
Notice the pattern across all six: every question is a small scenario with one best action. That is the shape of the CRCST exam. It rarely asks you to recite a definition in isolation. Instead it puts you at the bedside, at the assembly table, or on the phone with the OR, and asks what you do next. The right answer is the one that follows HSPA practice, protects the patient, and respects the workflow order.
This is why explanations matter more than scores. A sample question you miss teaches you a principle you can apply to ten future questions: PPE before contact, inspection before wrapping, BI proves lethality, one-way traffic flow, event-related sterility, professionalism under pressure. Collect principles, not just correct answers. Our domain breakdown guide maps each principle to its domain weight.
3 How to use sample questions in your study plan
Sample questions have a specific job at a specific time. Early in your prep, use a handful per domain to find your weak spots before you invest weeks of reading. Mid-prep, use them as chapter checkpoints: read a section, then answer questions from memory to prove the reading stuck. Late in prep, stop sampling and switch to full timed practice, because the exam is 150 mixed questions under a clock and only full runs train that skill.
The most common misuse is treating a good sample-question score as readiness. Six questions cannot sample 7 domains at real weights, and familiarity with a small set inflates scores fast. Rotate to fresh questions, keep logging misses by domain, and let at least two full timed 150-question runs be your final verdict. Our practice test strategy guide shows how to sequence all of this across your study weeks.
! Sample-question traps
- Memorizing the samples. Retaking the same six questions until you score 6 of 6 teaches you six questions. The exam has 150 you have never seen.
- Skipping the why. A correct guess without understanding is a future miss. Read every explanation, even for questions you got right.
- Sampling only favorite topics. If you only try sterilization questions, you will only discover you are good at sterilization. Sample all 7 domains.
- Confusing samples with the real thing. These are style matches, not HSPA items. They train your thinking, not your memory of specific questions.
