Two gates, no shortcuts

CRCST Certification Requirements: The Complete Checklist

Two requirements, two routes, one testing window. Everything HSPA asks for, verified and in plain language.

The short answer: HSPA requires two things for the CRCST: a high school diploma or GED, and 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department, split 120/120/120/24/16 across five areas. You can finish the hours before testing (full certification) or pass first and complete them within six months (provisional certification). After HSPA approves your application, you get a 120-day window to test at a Prometric center.

1 Requirement one: education

The education bar is straightforward: a high school diploma or GED. No college degree, no specific coursework, no prerequisite classes. HSPA keeps this gate low on purpose, because the real screening happens in the experience requirement and on the exam itself. If you have the diploma, you clear this gate permanently. Our career path guide shows where this fits in the full journey from day one to certified.

2 Requirement two: 400 hands-on hours

This is the requirement that does the heavy lifting. HSPA requires 400 hours of hands-on experience in a real sterile processing department, distributed across five areas in an exact split:

Experience areaRequired hours
Decontamination120
Preparing and packaging instruments120
Sterilization and disinfection120
Storage and distribution24
Quality assurance processes16
Total400

The split is not random. The three 120-hour areas match the three 21% exam domains, so your hours and your study time point at the same targets. At full-time pace, 400 hours is about ten weeks of department work. Every hour must be verified by an SPD manager or supervisor on HSPA's experience documentation forms, so keep your records clean from day one.

What counts: paid employment and volunteer work both count, as long as the work happens inside a real sterile processing department handling real instruments. Classroom study, online courses, and simulations do not count. HSPA does not place candidates, so finding your own practicum, job, or volunteer spot is part of the process.

3 Two routes to the same credential

HSPA offers two paths because the classic chicken-and-egg problem is real: employers prefer certified techs, but certification requires department hours.

Route 1: full CRCST. You complete and document the 400 hours before applying. Pass the exam and you receive full certification immediately. The hours must have been completed within the five years before testing.

Route 2: provisional CRCST. You pass the exam first, before finishing the hours. HSPA grants provisional status, and you get six months from your exam date to complete and document the required 400 hours. This route lets you test while your studying is fresh and job-hunt with "provisional CRCST" on your resume.

The provisional route has teeth: if you do not finish and document the hours within exactly six months of passing, provisional certification is revoked and you must reapply and retake the exam. Line up a department for your hours before you test whenever possible. Our requirements deep-dive compares the routes in detail.

Which route fits you?

Answer three questions and we will point you at the right route.

1. Do you have a high school diploma or GED?

2. Have you completed 400 verified hours in an SPD (120/120/120/24/16)?

3. Can you secure department hours within 6 months of passing?

4 The application and testing window

Once your route is chosen, the logistics run like this. You submit your application to HSPA with your documentation; HSPA asks candidates to allow three to four weeks for processing. After approval, you receive a 120-day testing window to schedule and complete the exam. You book your own appointment at a Prometric test center, and HSPA recommends scheduling within the first 45 days to get your preferred date.

The exam itself is 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours: 125 scored, 25 unscored pretest items you cannot identify. Results come back as pass or fail. The application fee is $140, and each retake needs a new application at the same price. Our exam day tips guide covers what happens when you walk into the test center.

! Requirement traps

  1. Assuming classroom hours count. They do not. Only hands-on work in a real SPD, verified by a supervisor, satisfies the 400 hours.
  2. Missing the provisional deadline. Six months from your exam date is exact. Miss it and the credential is revoked, and you reapply and retest.
  3. Waiting to find hours until after applying. The department search is the longest lead time. Start it before you apply, not after.
  4. Scheduling outside the window. Your 120 days start at approval, not at application. Track the date and book early.
Memory anchor: diploma plus 400 hours, split 120/120/120/24/16. Hours first for full status, exam first for provisional, six months to finish either way.

Frequently asked questions

What are the CRCST certification requirements?

HSPA requires a high school diploma or GED plus 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department, split across decontamination (120 hours), preparing and packaging (120), sterilization and disinfection (120), storage and distribution (24), and quality assurance (16).

Can I take the CRCST exam before finishing the 400 hours?

Yes, through the provisional route. Pass the exam first to earn provisional CRCST status, then complete and document the 400 hours within six months of your exam date.

Do the 400 hours have to be paid work?

No. The hours can be paid employment or volunteer work in a sterile processing department. Every hour must be verified by an SPD manager or supervisor.

How are the 400 hours verified?

Hours are documented on HSPA's experience forms and verified by an SPD manager or supervisor. Keep clean records from day one, because undocumented hours do not count.

How old can my experience hours be?

HSPA accepts hands-on hours completed within the five years before testing for the full certification route.

Is there an age requirement for the CRCST?

HSPA's published requirements are the high school diploma or GED and the 400 hours of hands-on experience. No separate age requirement is listed.
