Happy Sterile Processing Week. Every October, hospitals and surgery centers across the country pause to recognize the technicians who make safe surgery possible: the people in decontamination, assembly, and sterile storage who never appear on the surgeon's team photo but whose work touches every single patient. This free practice set is our way of celebrating the week, and your craft.
Below you will find 25 real CRCST-style practice questions drawn from our 1,000-question bank. They span the full exam: point-of-use prep, cleaning and decontamination, disinfection, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, and the professional practice questions that round out the test. Five are warm-up level, eighteen sit at true exam difficulty, and two are the kind of curveballs that separate passing scores from great ones.
1How to use this practice set
Treat it like a mini exam section, not a reading assignment. Read each question, commit to an answer in your head (or tap one), then reveal the correct choice and read the explanation. Every question includes a full rationale: not just which letter is right, but why the right answer is right and why the tempting wrong answers fail. That is where the learning happens. Research on test preparation consistently shows that attempting an answer before seeing the correct one, a technique called retrieval practice, builds far stronger recall than rereading notes.
Keep an eye on your score as you go. The progress bar at the top of the quiz tracks how many you have answered, and your running score appears beside it. There is no timer here on purpose: Sterile Processing Week is about mastery, not speed. If you want timed conditions, our full simulator recreates the real 150-question, 3-hour exam.
2What these questions cover
The CRCST exam tests whether you can keep instruments safe from the moment they leave the procedure room until they reach the next patient. The questions below follow that same journey. You will see point-of-use treatment decisions (what to do with instruments sitting in the OR), cleaning chemistry (enzyme detergents, pH, water quality), mechanical cleaning (ultrasonic cleaners and washer-disinfectors), inspection and assembly, packaging choices (peel pouches, wraps, rigid containers), sterilization methods and monitoring (steam, biological and chemical indicators), sterile storage rules, and the documentation and quality practices that hold the whole system together.
Each question is tagged with its topic and difficulty so you can spot your weak areas. If the sterilization monitoring questions keep tripping you up, that is a signal to spend extra study time on biological indicators, Bowie-Dick tests, and parametric release before exam day.
3A note on sources
Every explanation is grounded in the standards the exam itself is built on: the HSPA CRCST certification resources, ANSI/AAMI ST79 (the comprehensive guide to steam sterilization), CDC sterilization and disinfection guidelines, and OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard. When an explanation cites a practice, it traces back to one of these primary sources, which are linked at the bottom of this page. Study the standards, not just the questions, and the exam gets much less mysterious.
One more tip before you start: after you finish, look at your misses as a group rather than one by one. If three of your five misses are all about sterilization monitoring, you have found your highest-value study topic for the week. Fix the pattern, not just the question, and your next score will jump.
